Join us for a Beer & Books evening with Christopher Dodd as he presents his first book, Unseen Thing: The Mulmur Hills Poltergeist — the true story of one of Ontario's strangest unsolved hauntings, two nights before Halloween.

In the years after the First World War, the Dobson family left city life for a farm in Mulmur Township, hoping for a quieter future. What followed instead was an ordeal that made headlines across the province: horse mutilations, shaking floors, phantom knocks, and objects that moved without explanation. The family eventually fled, but the newspapers kept coming and so did the sightseers, and the place became known as the "Spook Farm." Toronto spiritualist and investigator Ivan Hutchins arrived to hold séances and search for an answer. Nearly a century later, the mystery is still unsolved.

Drawing on archival research, historical records and folklore studies, Christopher Dodd revisits the case and asks why stories like it keep their hold on skeptics and believers alike. Mark Leslie, author of Haunted Hamilton and Spooky Sudbury, calls it "a brilliant merger of the skeptical inquiry of Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World and the fact-versus-fiction ambiguity of The Amityville Horror" — a Canadian story that predates the American legend by more than forty years.

Christopher Dodd is a writer, filmmaker and educator, and the creator of the Canadian Strange YouTube channel. He wrote the feature film Wrecked and co-wrote Kill For Me, and his nonfiction has appeared in The Creemore Echo. He has long-standing family ties to Mulmur, just up the road from us — this is a local story told by a local author. Unseen Thing, published by Dundurn Press, is his first book.

The event takes place at Creemore Springs Brewery on Thursday, October 29th. Doors open at 6:30pm, event starts at 7pm. Christopher will read from and talk about the book, followed by a Q&A with Curiosity House owners Joel and Kate, and a book signing.
